Modern Painters

Modern Painters (1843–60) is a book on art by John Ruskin which argues that recent painters emerging from the tradition of the picturesque are superior in the art of landscape to the old masters. The book was primarily written as a defence of the later work of J.M.W. Turner. Ruskin used the book to argue that art should devote itself to the accurate documentation of nature. In Ruskin's view Turner had developed from early detailed documentation of nature to a later more profound insight into natural forces and atmospheric effects.

Ruskin added later volumes in subsequent years. Volume two (1846) placed emphasis on symbolism in art, expressed through nature. The second volume was influential on the early development of Pre-Raphaelitism. He produced three more volumes, with the fifth and final volume appearing in 1860.

Blouin Modern Painters is a monthly art magazine published in New York City by Louise Blouin Media. The magazine is published 12 times a year and available in print and digital forms.

History

Louise Blouin Media is the third owner of the magazine, which was launched in England in 1987 by the art critic Peter Fuller, who served as editor until his death in an automobile accident in 1990. Fuller's associate editor, Karen Wright, acquired the title from its original backers, who included Bernard Jacobson of Bernard Jacobson Gallery and David Landau, founder and then editor of the scholarly journal, Print Quarterly. Wright was retained for a short period in a consultancy capacity when the magazine was purchased by its present owners in the early 2000s and its publishing operation was brought to New York City.
